THE COMPLETE NEXUS GUIDE FOR VANCOUVER TRAVELLERS

If you cross the US border even twice a year from Vancouver, NEXUS is one of the best investments you can make. It cuts border wait times dramatically, gets you through security faster at YVR, and several of the credit cards already recommended on this site will cover the entire application fee for you.

This guide covers everything you need to know about NEXUS as a Vancouver traveller, what it is, what it costs, how to apply, what to expect at your YVR interview, and how to get it for free.

What Is NEXUS?

NEXUS is a trusted traveller program jointly run by the Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection, designed to speed up border crossings into Canada and the United States for low-risk, pre-approved travellers. Canada Border Services Agency

Once approved, NEXUS gives you access to dedicated lanes and kiosks at air, land, and marine border crossings between Canada and the US. At airports specifically it means skipping the regular customs queue entirely when returning to Canada, and using TSA PreCheck lanes when flying through US airports.

For Vancouver travellers who cross the border regularly, whether driving to Bellingham for shopping, flying to Seattle or San Francisco, or travelling internationally through a US connection, NEXUS is genuinely transformative.

What Does NEXUS Cost?

There is a $120 USD non-refundable application processing fee. NEXUS memberships are valid for 5 years. Children under 18 are free. Canada Border Services Agency

The fee increased from $50 USD to $120 USD in October 2024, the first increase in over 20 years. At current exchange rates the $120 USD works out to approximately $165 to $170 CAD depending on the exchange rate at the time you apply.

The fee is non-refundable even if your application is denied, though most applicants with clean records are approved without issue.

At $120 USD for five years that works out to roughly $24 USD per year, which is exceptional value for the time savings it delivers.

What Are the Benefits?

At YVR specifically:

NEXUS applicants at YVR go through a two-step process involving a Canadian interview administered by CBSA and a US interview administered by US CBP. Yvr Once approved, the benefits at YVR are immediate and practical.

When you return to Canada on an international flight, you use the NEXUS kiosks rather than the regular customs line. On a busy international arrival at YVR, this can save you 30 to 60 minutes or more. The NEXUS kiosk line is almost always empty or near-empty.

At US airports:

NEXUS members get access to TSA PreCheck lanes at US airports. This means no removing shoes, no taking laptops out of bags, and no removing liquids, through a dedicated faster security lane. On a busy travel day at Seattle-Tacoma or LAX this is a significant time saving.

At US Customs and Border Protection:

NEXUS members can use Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States by air. Same benefit as Global Entry but at a fraction of the cost since NEXUS and Global Entry are now the same price.

At land border crossings:

Dedicated NEXUS lanes at Peace Arch, Pacific Highway, and other major crossings between BC and Washington State. On a summer weekend when regular lanes can back up for hours, the NEXUS lane typically moves in minutes.

At marine crossings:

NEXUS members can report arrival into Canada by phone rather than docking at a customs office. Useful for boaters crossing the border regularly.

Who Qualifies for NEXUS?

NEXUS is designed for low-risk, pre-approved travellers. You are likely to qualify if you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or a US citizen or permanent resident, have no criminal record, have no customs violations, and have a history of complying with border rules.

You are unlikely to qualify if you have a criminal record including DUIs or drug-related offences, have had previous customs seizures or false declarations, or are a citizen of certain countries with additional screening requirements.

The interview process exists precisely to verify your background and eligibility. Officers already have your background check results before the interview. Being honest throughout the application is essential.

How to Apply: Step by Step

Step 1: Create a Trusted Traveller Programs account

Go to ttp.cbp.dhs.gov and create an account. This is the US government portal that handles NEXUS applications for both Canadian and American applicants. You will need a valid email address.

Step 2: Complete the application

The application asks for your personal information, travel history for the past five years, employment history, vehicle information if relevant, and criminal history. Be thorough and honest throughout. The application takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Have your passport handy.

Step 3: Pay the application fee

The $120 USD fee is required at the time of application submission through the Trusted Traveller Program System and can be paid by credit card or electronic bank transfer. The fee is non-refundable even if an application is denied. U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Step 4: Wait for conditional approval

Both CBSA and CBP review your application independently. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on current demand. You will receive an email notification in your TTP account dashboard when conditionally approved.

Step 5: Schedule your Canadian interview at YVR

Vancouver International Airport is one of the official NEXUS enrolment centre locations in Canada. To schedule your Canadian interview, sign in to the Trusted Traveller Programs System, go to the scheduler, and select an open Canadian enrolment centre location. Canada Border Services Agency

Interview slots at YVR can fill up quickly. Check regularly as cancellations open up new appointments frequently. Third party services like Appointment Scanner send you alerts when new slots appear at YVR if you want to avoid checking manually.

Step 6: Complete the US interview

You have two options for completing the US portion of your NEXUS interview. You can choose to complete the US interview before your next scheduled flight to the US at a US preclearance location within a Canadian airport, or upon arrival at a US airport with enrolment on arrival. No appointment is needed for the US interview. Canada Border Services Agency

The most convenient option for YVR travellers is to complete the US portion at the YVR US preclearance area before a flight to the US. You do this on the day of your departure.

Step 7: Attend your interview

The interview is straightforward. Officers will take your photo, fingerprints, and iris scan. The interview typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. They already have your background check results and are primarily verifying that you are honest and consistent with your application. Answer questions truthfully and directly.

Step 8: Receive your card

Your NEXUS card arrives by mail within approximately 10 to 14 days of successful completion of both interviews.

How to Get NEXUS for Free or Discounted

This is where YVRPoints readers have a significant advantage. Several Canadian credit cards offer a NEXUS application fee rebate as a cardholder benefit, which means you can get NEXUS effectively free when you hold the right card.

Four financial institutions in Canada offer a NEXUS rebate as a perk for some of their cards: American Express, TD Canada Trust, BMO, and CIBC.

Here are the most relevant ones for YVRPoints readers:

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Up to $100 CAD rebate on the NEXUS application fee, once every 48 months. Additional cardholders on the same account can also receive the rebate. This is one of the cards we already recommend for Aeroplan earning, making it a natural fit.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Up to $100 CAD rebate on the NEXUS application fee, once every 48 months.

American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card Up to $100 CAD rebate on the NEXUS application fee.

American Express Gold Rewards Card Up to $50 CAD rebate on the NEXUS application fee.

CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege NEXUS application fee rebate every 4 years.

BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard Up to $200 CAD rebate, which covers the full fee at current exchange rates.

The practical implication is significant. If you hold the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, a card we already recommend for Vancouver travellers because of its Aeroplan earn rates and travel benefits, your NEXUS application is effectively free up to $100 CAD. The remaining balance is modest at current exchange rates.

A note on timing: the rebates are offered once every 48 months, which aligns almost exactly with the NEXUS renewal cycle of 5 years. Plan your card applications and NEXUS renewals together to maximize this benefit.

NEXUS Renewal

NEXUS cards are valid for 5 years. You can start the renewal process up to one year before expiry. The good news is that renewal is often done without an in-person interview. The cost is the same $120 USD. Do not let it lapse. If it expires you have to start the full application process over.

Start the renewal process at the 11-month mark before expiry to give yourself plenty of time to complete the process and schedule any required interview.

NEXUS vs Global Entry vs TSA PreCheck

A common question for Vancouver travellers is how NEXUS compares to the alternatives.

NEXUS is the best choice for Canadians who cross the US-Canada border regularly by any means, air, land, or sea. It includes all the benefits of Global Entry and TSA PreCheck in a single program at the same price. For most Vancouver travellers NEXUS is the clear choice.

Global Entry is a US-only program primarily designed for international travellers entering the United States. At $120 USD it now costs the same as NEXUS and offers fewer benefits for Canadians. There is almost no reason for a Canadian traveller to choose Global Entry over NEXUS.

TSA PreCheck is an expedited security program for US airports only. At $85 USD for five years it is cheaper than NEXUS but only provides expedited security at US airports. NEXUS includes TSA PreCheck as a benefit, making TSA PreCheck alone redundant for NEXUS holders.

The verdict for Vancouver travellers: NEXUS is the only program worth applying for. It covers everything the others do and more, at the same or lower price.

Common Questions

How long does it take to get approved?

Processing times vary significantly. Current estimates range from a few months to over a year depending on application volume and your individual background. Apply well in advance of when you want to use the benefit.

Can my children get NEXUS?

Children under 18 must also apply to get their own card but if eligible are admitted to the program free of charge. Canada Border Services Agency Children do need to attend the interview with a parent or guardian.

What if I have a DUI or criminal record?

A criminal record does not automatically disqualify you but significantly increases the likelihood of denial. The US side in particular takes a strict view of DUIs and drug-related offences. Apply honestly and be prepared for the possibility of denial.

Does NEXUS work at Peace Arch and the Pacific Highway crossing?

Yes. Both are major crossings between BC and Washington State with dedicated NEXUS lanes. On busy summer weekends these lanes can save hours compared to the regular line.

What happens if I am denied?

The $120 USD application fee is non-refundable. You will receive notification of denial and in some cases an explanation. You can appeal or reapply after addressing the reason for denial.

Is NEXUS Worth It for Vancouver Travellers?

For most Vancouver travellers the answer is clearly yes. The time savings at YVR customs alone justify the cost within a handful of trips. Add the TSA PreCheck benefit for US flights, the land border lanes for trips to Bellingham or Seattle, and the effectively free cost when using an Aeroplan credit card rebate, and NEXUS becomes one of the best value travel investments available.

If you cross the US border two or more times per year in any form, apply for NEXUS. The sooner you apply the sooner you benefit, and processing times mean starting early pays off.
