World Cup: YVR to Mexico City in Business Class for Just 24,800 Aeroplan

Mexico City

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing across North America this summer, here is a points deal worth knowing about. Business class from Vancouver to Mexico City on June 23 is available for just 24,800 Aeroplan points plus $140 CAD in taxes and fees. This is one of the best value business class redemptions we have seen on a short-haul North American route from YVR.

The Deal at a Glance

  • Route: YVR to Mexico City (MEX) nonstop

  • Date: Tuesday June 23, 2026

  • Points cost: 24,800 Aeroplan points

  • Taxes and fees: $140 CAD

  • Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8

  • Cash equivalent: approximately $1,100 CAD one way in business class

The CPP Calculation

At 24,800 points against a $1,100 CAD cash fare, this redemption delivers 4.44 cents per point in value.

For context, the points community considers anything above 1.5 cents per point a worthwhile Aeroplan redemption. Anything above 3 cents is exceptional. At 4.44 cents per point this is one of the strongest short-haul business class redemptions available from Vancouver right now and well above what you would typically see on a North American route.

Your all-in out-of-pocket cost for a business class seat that would otherwise cost $1,100 is just $140 CAD in taxes and fees. That is an extraordinary result.

The Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 8

737 Business Class Seats

A quick note on what to expect in the air. This flight operates on the Boeing 737 MAX 8, a narrow-body aircraft rather than a wide-body like the 787 Dreamliner used on transpacific routes. Business class on this aircraft features recliner-style seats rather than fully flat lie-flat beds. Seats are wider than economy with more recline, extra legroom, and better amenities, but this is not the same lie-flat business class experience you would find on Air Canada's long-haul international routes. For a short-haul flight to Mexico City this is completely appropriate and comfortable. Just set your expectations accordingly.

Lounge Access at YVR

Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge

Here is something worth knowing before you head to the airport. As a business class passenger on this redemption you have access to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge at Vancouver International Airport before your flight. The Maple Leaf Lounge offers complimentary internet access, relaxing seating, light snacks, beverages, quiet zones, and helpful staff. It is a genuinely comfortable way to spend the time before departure.

One important distinction though. The premium Air Canada Signature Suite at YVR is reserved exclusively for customers flying to Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, or New Zealand on Air Canada operated flights. Mexico City falls outside those eligible destinations, so the Signature Suite is not accessible on this redemption. The Maple Leaf Lounge is your lounge for this trip, which is still a solid pre-flight experience.

Checked Baggage

As a Signature Class business class passenger on Air Canada you receive two checked bags included in your fare. No need to pay for bags on this trip, a meaningful saving compared to economy fares where baggage fees add up quickly.

The World Cup Angle

Azteca Stadium (Capacity 87,000)

We will be upfront about the timing. June in Mexico City is firmly in the rainy season. Temperatures hover around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius which is perfectly comfortable, but afternoon thunderstorms are common and the city is more humid than ideal. It is not the most traditional time to visit.

That said, the 2026 FIFA World Cup changes the calculus entirely for the right traveller. Mexico City's Estadio Azteca is hosting the opening match of the entire 2026 World Cup on June 11 with Mexico versus South Africa, followed by Mexico versus South Korea on June 18 in Guadalajara, and Mexico versus Czechia back at Estadio Azteca on June 24.

Departing June 23 puts you in Mexico City the day before Mexico takes on Czechia at the iconic Estadio Azteca on June 24. If you can get your hands on tickets to that match, this trip becomes an unforgettable World Cup experience in one of football's most storied venues.

The World Cup runs from June 11 through July 19, 2026, with Mexico City hosting five matches in total at Estadio Azteca. Even without match tickets, the city will be electric with football energy throughout the tournament. Street screenings, fan zones, and the general atmosphere of a host city during the World Cup make for a genuinely memorable trip regardless of whether you are inside the stadium.

For football fans this is a unique opportunity. For everyone else, June is a perfectly functional time to visit Mexico City if you go in with realistic expectations about the weather.

What to Do in Mexico City

If you are going purely for the experience beyond the World Cup, Mexico City rewards travellers richly. The historic centre and Zocalo plaza, the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan just outside the city, the world-class restaurants of Polanco and Roma Norte, and the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan are all worth your time. Mexico City has quietly become one of the best food cities in the world and a long weekend there is genuinely excellent value once you factor in how affordable accommodation and dining are compared to European or Asian destinations.
